VINTAGE VIDEO: “All Night Long” by Rainbow

The video for Rainbow’s excellent 1979 track “All Night Long” was a staple of early MTV, and probably helped sell a lot of copies of the Down To Earth album, on which the song appeared.

Rainbow was, of course, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore’s project in between his two stints in Deep Purple. The band went through numerous personnel changes throughout its existence. The lineup that recorded “All Night Long” and the Down To Earth album—Ritchie Blackmore (guitar), Graham Bonnet (lead vocals), Roger Glover (bass), Cozy Powell (drums), and Don Airey (keyboards)—was easily the best in the band’s turbulent history. It’s really a shame that the Down To Earth version of Rainbow lasted only two years, 1979 and 1980.

I always thought that the blonde dancing off to the side of the stage was a nice touch!

This video kick a$$. I model the way I treat woman woman based upon Graham Bonnet’s suave style exhibited in this video.

  3. swayingball Says:

This is comedy to me… Bonnet is the HR version George Michael. I am embarrassed for everyone behind him. Very sad…

  4. John Curley Says:

I never thought that I would see the names Graham Bonnet and George Michael in the same sentence. Nice one, swayingball! :)

  5. I liked Lionel Ritchie’s version better! Is he related to Ritchie Blackmore?

  6. Pat Prince Says:

I disagree with swayingball. Bonnet looks and moves just like Rob Halford used to. All you have to do is change the clothes to S&M leather gear and viola! Halford may have the better distinctive voice but Bonnet also has a cool raspy vocal (completely different than George Michael’s affectations). Plus, this is a good song and (always) a GREAT guitar solo by Ritchie. And the campy feel of the groupie dancing in this video is nothing in comparison to what was to come for the storyline visuals of music videos. It would get a lot worse.
If only MTV played videos like this again. Now all we see is rappers posturing.

  15. Does anybody know a bit more about Sylvia ….

  16. jonathan Says:

The lovely girl in the video is Sylvia Bell, from Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. There is no doubt that she adds to the whole thing enormously. Unfortunately Sylvia died of leukaemia in the 1990s, aged about 40…..She really was lovely and was a Miss United Kingdom contestant just before she did the video.
