Howling Bells 2009

The Web site of the music magazine Paste is currently featuring a preview of the entire Radio Wars album by the Australian-born, London-based quartet Howling Bells. Radio Wars is the group’s second album, following their self-titled 2006 debut. Radio Wars is set to be released in America this coming Tuesday, July 28th, on Nettwerk Records. To hear the preview, click here.

I bought the album earlier this year as an import from the UK. It’s quite good, definitely worth adding to your collection. The tracks “Cities Burning Down” and “Digital Hearts” are particular standouts.

To watch the video for “Cities Burning Down” by Howling Bells, click below:

Howling Bells recently finished a North American tour with Coldplay and will be playing several outdoor music festivals in Europe this summer, including England’s V Festival.

To read Powerline A.D.’s exclusive Q&A with Juanita Stein of Howling Bells from January 2008, click here. At the time that we did the Q&A with Juanita, the band was about to go into the studio to record Radio Wars. So it makes for an interesting read now that the album is about to be released in America.

Video By the Band The Bezerker Causes Controversy on YouTube

Posted in Heavy Metal with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on May 7, 2009 by Patrick Prince

A band like The Berzerker trying to be controversial?!… what a stretch! Isn’t this the same band who tries to make Slipknot sound and look like the Beach Boys? I guess the real shock is that this extreme Australian industrial metal band covers a pop song, as in the once popular T.A.T.U.’s “All the Things She Said.” Then releasing a video of it with simulated underage lesbian scenes. Viva Lolitapalooza, I guess.

It’s only been a day or so since the video was first posted and it already received a record number of complaints. In fact, to view it, you have to sign in and then confirm your birth date, restricted to 18+:

This video or group may contain content that is inappropriate for some users, as flagged by YouTube’s user community.

By clicking “Confirm”, you are agreeing that all videos or groups flagged by the YouTube community will be viewable by this account.

But, really, the video’s not that outrageous. It’s all suggestive BS to get eyeballs and stir the PR pot. This is actually the least outrageous the band has ever been. Don’t take my word for it. Listen to their music. Watch their other videos. Read their lyrics.

The Berzerker’s version of this crappy pop song will not be released as a single, even though there has been heavy demand for it.. As a statement warns on one of the YouTube consoles for “All the Things She Said”:

This version will NOT be released, (please stop asking) Its just the Berzerker …

Exactly.

UK ska legends The Specials started their comeback by performing two songs on the Tuesday, April 7th edition of the BBC-TV music program Later with Jools Holland. The Specials, making their first TV appearance since 1981, performed “Gangsters” and “A Message To You, Rudy.” Both songs sounded superb. And thanks to You Tube, you don’t have to take my word for it. You can watch the clips by clicking in the appropriate places below:

Gangsters:

A Message To You, Rudy:

BBC 6 Music’s Web site features an article about The Specials’ appearance on Later with Jools Holland that says that, in addition to their already-scheduled UK tour dates, they may appear at this summer’s Glastonbury festival as well. To read the article, click here.

The Specials’ UK tour starts on April 22nd in Newcastle and runs through May 15th. In July, they will be appearing in Ireland and Australia. There haven’t been any North American dates announced yet. Hopefully, those dates will be forthcoming. Fingers crossed.

Australian-born, UK-based rockers Howling Bells discussed their upcoming Radio Wars album among other things recently in a wide-ranging video interview with the NME. Topics discussed during the interview included: how the new material is going down with audiences; how the songwriting for Radio Wars was a more democratic process than that of the debut album, where the songwriting was dominated by frontwoman Juanita Stein; lessons learned from recording the first album led to a more structured process for the second album; the more optimistic sound for the new album compared to the debut album; Juanita on how the bad weather in the UK inspires creativity; other bands they’re listening to; and favorite albums of 2008.

To listen to Howling Bells perform an acoustic version of the song “Treasure Hunt” from the new album, click below:

Radio Wars is due for release on March 2nd in the UK and March 6th in Australia. No domestic American release is scheduled at the moment from what I understand, but one will hopefully be forthcoming.

Live Version Of New Arctic Monkeys Song, “Crying Lightning,” Turns Up On You Tube

A live version of “Crying Lightning,” a song from the upcoming third album from Arctic Monkeys (pictured above), has shown up on You Tube. The song was recently shown on Australian television and was recorded earlier this month at the Big Day Out Festival in Sydney, Australia. To watch the live video for “Crying Lightning” by Arctic Monkeys, click below:

I can’t really say that the song is a standout track. It’s certainly a shift in direction from the material on their first two albums. I’ll have to hear additional material from their new album before I can say whether or not I approve of the direction that the band is taking.

Howling Bells Release Video For Their New Single, “Cities Burning Down”

The great Australian-born, London-based indie-rock band Howling Bells today released the video for ”Cities Burning Down,” which is the second single from their upcoming Radio Wars album. The video was directed by Piper Ferguson at Lodger Films. The “Cities Burning Down” single will be released as a 7-inch vinyl single and as a digital download on February 23rd in the UK. “Cities Burning Down” has been part of Howling Bells’ live set for several years

The video looks quite striking, featuring the band performing in front of images of fire as well as sitting atop motorcycles. And Juanita Stein looks amazing in the video. Her current look reminds me a lot of Chrissie Hynde circa 1979.

Howling Bells Return With “Into The Chaos” Single

London-based band Howling Bells (pictured above) recently released “Into The Chaos,” the lead single from their upcoming second album, which will be titled Radio Wars.

The “Into The Chaos” single is less moody and atmospheric than the material on Howling Bells’ self-titled 2006 debut album, and it actually brings to mind some of the material that they had recorded when the band was still based in its native Australia and was known as Waikiki.

To watch Howling Bells perform “Into The Chaos” live at the Hoxton Square Bar & Kitchen in London, click below:

To hear the studio version of “Into The Chaos,” see the music player on the band’s MySpace page.

I contacted Howling Bells to see if there would be a video for the studio version of “Into The Chaos,” and they responded that time constraints dictated that there wouldn’t be a video made for that single. However, they went on to inform me that a video for the next single from Radio Wars, a song called “Cities Burning Down,” has just been completed and would be available for viewing in about a month. The videos from Howling Bells’ debut album were all really well done, so I am curious to see what they came up with for the “Cities Burning Down” video.
