The Dead Weather -- David Swanson Photo

The Dead Weather (pictured above in a David Swanson photo) have done a fantastic 20-minute live session for From The Basement. Songs performed included “Hang You From The Heavens” and “Treat Me Like Your Mother.” Killer stuff! To watch the session, click here.

In other news from The Dead Weather, the band announced during interviews with UK radio stations that they have enough songs to record a second album. Jack White told BBC 6 Music, “It is true, we’ve got songs coming out of every pore, and every orifice, and every digit, but mostly the digits.” White also told NME Radio, “We’d love to have the second record out within a year of the first one.”

For more on The Dead Weather’s upcoming second album, see the articles from BBC 6 Music and NME.com. There is video of an interview that the band did this week with NME Radio in the NME.com link.

The Dead Weather are doing a free show at Shoreditch Church in London tonight.

Crystal Stilts Interview on Powerline A.D. Website

Crystal_Stilts

Click here at www.powerlinead.com for an interview with Brooklyn indie rock band Crystal Stilts — where band members talk about everything from New York City to poet Charles Baudelaire.

Vocalist Brad Hargett (standing, middle):

“I believe there are very few writings by Baudelaire that don’t contain at least a hint of dread. To me, Whitman seemed the most purely ecstatic of the modern/city poets. That said I don’t think my impressions of the city are entirely claustrophobic.”

Ozzy Admits He’s Done His “Fair Share of Bad Gigs” and He’s Not Embarrassed By It

Ozzy

Ozzy tells Billboard.com:

“I want to give the audience my heart and soul every night, but sometimes I pull it off and sometimes I don’t,” he says. “We’re human. I don’t use any tricks, I don’t lip synch my voice, what you see is what you get. I’ve done my fair share of bad gigs, and I’m not embarrassed to say that.”

Diary of a modest madman?

We’ve all heard concerts where Ozzy has been a little off. He’s only human. And, let’s face it, he’s well past his prime. But he’s also a legend and still has the passion. I think the fans understand and give him a pass.

Liam Gallagher Wants To Start A New Band

Posted in British music, British rock, Music, Rock Music with tags , , , , , , , , , on October 28, 2009 by John Curley

Liam Gallagher -- Times of London Pic

In an interview with the Scottish newspaper The Scotsman, former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher (pictured above in a photo from The Times of London) discussed his desire to start a new band in the New Year. Gallagher told the newspaper:

“Getting away from the whole Oasis thing is going to be a good thing I suppose. I don’t want to do anything solo. I want to be in a band. But we can do things a lot differently these days. It’ll definitely be rock ‘n’ roll.

“For now, I’ll be relaxing at home, just getting out of music for a bit and then I’m going to start up something maybe after January, do something different, see where it goes. But I’ll be having a breather from the music for a bit without a doubt.”

Gallagher also spoke on his feelings about the breakup of Oasis:

“I’m always going to miss Oasis. It was my fucking thing, you know what I mean? It’s who I am. But it’s only a name. I’m still who I am and I can go and do something else. I’ve got music in me. I’ll never leave it behind but we’ll see where it goes. It might be shit but you don’t know until you try.”

While Gallagher enjoys working on his Pretty Green clothing line, he wants to get back into music:

“We’re doing the Pretty Green stuff, but you don’t just do 18 years of music and then go, ‘Right, that’s it, I want to do fucking clothes.’ There’s no point in looking cool and having no tunes is there?”

For more on this story, see the articles from XFM London and NME.com.

I’m curious to hear what direction Liam Gallagher’s new music will take. Will it sound like an Oasis tribute band? Or will he launch a completely new sound? And what will Liam’s now-estranged brother Noel have to say about Liam’s new music? I guess we’ll find out sometime in 2010.

Little Boots

Britain’s Little Boots has released yet another excellent single from her Hands album. “Earthquake” is a brilliant piece of electro pop. The video for the song, which was directed by David Wilson, is quite good as well. You can watch the video by clicking below:

Little Boots is currently touring the UK, and will be playing a sold-out show in Cambridge, England tomorrow night.

Them Crooked Vultures Put Debut Single “New Fang” Online

Posted in British music, British rock, Music, Rock Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 28, 2009 by John Curley

Them Crooked Vultures

Them Crooked Vultures, the “supergroup” comprised of Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme, and Led Zeppelin’s John Paul Jones, have put their debut single “New Fang” online on You Tube. It’s a good tune, and it actually sounds like a hybrid of the Foo Fighters, QOTSA, and Led Zep. If the rest of the album is this good, it’s going to be a monster seller.

To hear “New Fang” by Them Crooked Vultures, click below:

The self-titled debut album from Them Crooked Vultures is being released on November 16th in the UK and November 17th in America. They play at The Wiltern in Los Angeles on the night of the album’s American release. In December, Them Crooked Vultures will be touring Germany and the UK.

For more on this story, see the article from NME.com.

John Paul Jones recently discussed his involvement with Them Crooked Vultures with the BBC, which you can read about in an article from BBC 6 Music.

U2’s Rose Bowl Concert Is Now Available For Viewing On You Tube

Posted in Music, Rock Music with tags , , , , , , , , , , , , on October 27, 2009 by John Curley

U2 - 2

U2′s concert on Sunday night, October 25th at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, CA that was broadcast live on You Tube can now be viewed anytime on You Tube. To watch the concert, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V4QLFVrZ-fw or click below:

The concert is approximately two hours and 20 minutes in length.

In other U2 news, the band has revealed that they are disappointed in the lack of hits from their latest album, No Line On The Horizon. None of the album’s singles–”Get On Your Boots,” “Magnificent,” and “I’ll Go Crazy If I Don’t Go Crazy”–has performed particularly well in the charts. On the subject of the dearth of hits from the new album, Bono told the Associated Press:

“We weren’t really in that mindset. We felt that the album was a kind of an almost extinct species, and we should approach it in totality and create a mood and a feeling, and a beginning, middle, and an end. And I suppose we’ve made a work that is a bit challenging for people who have grown up on a diet of pop stars.”

Adam Clayton added:

“What is rock ‘n’ roll in this changing world? Because, to some extent, the concept of the music fan — the concept of the person who buys music and listens to music for the pleasure of music itself — is an outdated idea.”

Metallica, Axl Rose, and Justin Timberlake Now Share the Same Stalker

Posted in Heavy Metal, Rock Music with tags , , , , , , on October 27, 2009 by Patrick Prince

metallica_stalked

Worse than sharing the same management, I guess.

A Karen Jane McNeil is who they all fear. Yesterday, Metallica filed a restraining order to, according to TMX.com, “stay at least 150 yards away from all of the members of the band, their families and the people who run the Metallica fan club.” (even the fan club people are being stalked?!)

McNeil already did a stint in jail for stalking Axl Rose.
Who will she stalk next? So many celebrities, so little time. As long as it isn’t David Letterman. The poor bastard has had enough of this kind of thing.

Doug Martsch of Built To Spill Made Sure Major Label Gave His Family Health Insurance

Doug-Martsch-ww01

I love this story, and I just found out about it.

Before Warner Brothers signed Built To Spill to a major label contract, frontman Doug Martsch asked to have him and his family covered by health insurance.

“It was a hard decision to go with them — but it probably would have been harder if I wouldn’t have had a family,” he concedes. “If that was the case, and I was going to tour a lot and just work, then being on an independent label would have been fine. Because touring’s not that bad, and I kind of like the idea of a more fair system where we get what we deserve and the record company gets what it deserves. I mean, I don’t think we deserve to get whatever advance we got from Warner Bros. — we haven’t earned that yet, you know. But since I have a family, I didn’t want to tour a lot, and I needed to know I could still take care of things.”

In fact, yesterday, Sirius XMU reported that Martsch and his family have health coverage as long as he is alive.

Good for him. A nice story to hear in this day-and-age of the healthcare debate.

Powerline A.D.’s Sounds From Across The Pond Series Continues With London’s Common Purpose

Common Purpose

The latest entry in Powerline A.D.’s Sounds From Across The Pond series features the London-based quartet Common Purpose. They first came to my attention through the BBC Introducing section of the BBC London Web site.

Common Purpose’s sound evokes some of the UK’s finest bands, such as The Jam and The Rifles. The members of Common Purpose are (pictured above, left to right) Harry Watts (drums), Elliot Beasley (lead guitar and vocals), James Evans (lead vocals and rhythm guitar), and Cary Smith (bass). James, Harry, and Cary participated in the Q&A, which you can read here.
