The Dead Weather -- David Swanson Photo 2

The Dead Weather (pictured above in a David Swanson photo) have just premiered the video for their latest single, “Treat Me Like Your Mother.” The video, which was directed by Jonathan Glazer, is quite stunning and features band members Jack White and Alison Mosshart firing machine guns at each other. And the song is terrific as well.

To watch the video for “Treat Me Like Your Mother” by The Dead Weather, click below:

The Dead Weather’s debut album, Horehound, was released earlier this week. The band is a side project, and is comprised of vocalist Alison Mosshart of The Kills, drummer/vocalist Jack White of The White Stripes, guitarist Dean Fertita of Queens of the Stone Age, and bassist Jack Lawrence of The Greenhorns. White and Lawrence are also members of another side project, The Raconteurs.

The Dead Weather will be performing live at Terminal 5 in New York City this week on Thursday and Friday nights, July 16th and 17th. I will be attending the Thursday night performance with Pat Prince, the founder of this blog. A review of the show will be forthcoming on the main Powerline A.D. site.

Guns N’ Roses Uploader Agrees to Shill RIAA Propaganda

Posted in Rock Music with tags , , , , , on July 15, 2009 by Patrick Prince

cogill

There’s something very sinister about all this.

The blogger, Kevin Cogill (above), who made the Guns N’ Roses “masterpiece,” Chinese Democracy, available for free upload on his blog, came to an agreement with the RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) to produce an anti-piracy ad for them in the form of “radio or television message.”

Cogill was also sentenced to one year probation and two months of house arrest.

The big question, however, is how many real sales of Chinese Democracy did this blog upload spoil? Personally, I’m sceptical it was a difference maker.

As Wired.com put it:

According to court documents, after Cogill agreed to help produce an anti-piracy public service address with the RIAA, the government withdrew the $371,000 figure and agreed not to fine him. Los Angeles federal authorities in March said the figure was a “reasonable estimate” that gave the defendant the “benefit of the doubt.” The calculations, the government said, were based on each downloaded Guns N’ Roses track being worth 99 cents on iTunes.

And let’s not forget that Cogill was reportedly arrested at GUNPOINT! Like some violent criminal — like some guy who tried to kill Axl instead of making his almighty Chinese opus briefly available for upload.

Chinese Democracy: 17 years in the making, millions of dollars spent, an arrest at gunpoint, two months of house arrest, and the production of some crappy RIAA-induced anti-piracy ad.

Thanks alot. Axl! Take us back to the Paradise City: 1988 PLEASE!

Poor Pete Doherty?

petedoherty

Rather as NME put it, “Pocketless Pete Doherty.”

Doherty was embarassed to find that he had no money on him when he went to buy some clothes at a store he requested stay open late (with no customers about) for his shopping needs (ala diva Diana Ross).

This is the Libertines and Babyshambles frontman, damnit!

However, when he came to check out, he had no cash in his pockets. D’oh! He made a cell call to a friend. The friend came to the store with his credit card, and, oops, it was declined.

Another day in the life of Pete Doherty.

New Dead Weather Release Has 6 Golden Tickets

Posted in Rock Music with tags , , , , , , , on July 14, 2009 by Patrick Prince

dead_weather

What is this, a Wonka bar? Is Jack White Willie Wonka?! These are questions we can never answer. However, the new Dead Weather disc is out today and 6 of them will contain a golden ticket.

And you are not allowed to break into song like Charlie if you get one.

But what do you win? A tour, yes, but not of a chocolate factory.

Here’s a statement from singer Alison Mosshart herself (oddly enough, on The Kills MySpace blog):

The Dead Weather are releasing their new debut album Horehound TODAY! You can check out videos and songs from the album via their explore page (http://horehound.warnerreprise.com) or via their facebook application (http://apps.facebook.com/thedeadweather).

Both include links to download a free mp3 of “Treat Me Like Your Mother.”

If you haven’t checked out the controversial Jonathan Glazer video for “Treat Me Like Your Mother” visit the band’s youtube channel  (http://youtube.com/thedeadweathertv) to see it along with tons of other videos and live clips.

There are 6 GOLDEN TICKETS hidden within albums of Horehound. Find one and you will win an expense paid trip to Nashville, TN to tour the famous Third Man Records.

Good luck!

Yes. Good luck. And I wonder if any success with this project will kill The Kills’ future. No golden ticket for Jamie Hince.

Doomsday Clock NOT Ticking for the Name Smashing Pumpkins

Posted in Rock Music with tags , , , on July 14, 2009 by Patrick Prince

billy_Corgan

Call him MR. Pumpkin, please.

Billy Corgan is Billy Pumpkin after all. He has decided to keep the name Smashing Pumpkins even though he is the only original member left. Jimmy Chamberlin left earlier this year because he could no longer just “cash the check.”

Billy, on the band’s official Website, tells his fans that the band Smashing Pumpkins will continue:

“What the future holds is unknown to me. I am 100pct committed to the future of SP. I can tell you that. 100pct!! I’ve never been happier about being in SP, or a part of SP, than I am now. The music I am making sounds like The Smashing Pumpkins. It doesn’t sound like solo work, I can assure you of that.

Thank God for that.

“The idea of identity is a strange one to tackle. For many years, I treated the idea of the band named The Smashing Pumpkins as an existential concept that existed away from my being and body… The music that came out of this being and body. I’ve called the umbrella the songs came out under different names but to me I guess there really wasn’t a whole lot of difference. As they say, a song is a song.”

“I will never say to you what people say to me all the time, which is that ‘I am the band’. I am not ‘the band’, I am just the leader of the band.

The Sunday Times Of London Publishes Great Article About The Specials’ Reunion

The Specials -- Terry Hall

Today’s edition of The Sunday Times of London has published a fascinating piece on the reunion of the legendary UK ska band The Specials (pictured above top in a photo by Anthony Devlin). The article, which is titled “The Specials back on stage after 30 years” and was written by Tim Cooper, discusses the motivations of the individuals in the band for the reunion and how some of them were somewhat hesitant to join the reunion. Of course, one original member of the band, Jerry Dammers, declined to participate. Lead vocalist Terry Hall (pictured above, bottom) said of Dammers:

“I think it’s really sad that he’s not with us. And the longer it goes on without him, the harder it is for me to find the reason why. It’s pretty basic — do you wanna play or not? And he doesn’t seem to want to. But he can walk back in any time he wants.”

Hall is also very frank in the article about being diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The article also lists the tracks of the free CD by The Specials that was given away with the print edition of today’s Sunday Times of London. To read the article in full, click here.

The Specials played at Scotland’s T in the Park Festival this weekend. They begin a UK tour on November 1st.

Vocalist for Disturbed Emphasizes to German Mag How Well President Obama is Doing

Posted in Rock Music with tags , , , , on July 12, 2009 by Patrick Prince

Disturbed-David_Draiman

Vocalist David Draiman was very intelligent and articulate in his words to Metal Hammer on his opinions of the new American President:

So far he seems to be doing well. He seems to be heading in the right direction. His intentions are certainly good. I don’t know how realistic a public healthcare system is going to be, a socialized healthcare; that may be well beyond his presidency, even if he comes through a second term. There just isn’t enough medical staff to supply the demand; it’s just not enough. People would be on waiting lists for years before they got something done. So I think that, while his intentions are good in a lot of areas, the practicalities don’t always match up to them. But as far as getting greener, as far as changing the impression of the United States on a worldwide level — being a little bit more of an open hand as opposed to a closed fist — is a good thing. So we’re very hopeful — I’m very hopeful — of what he’ll be able to accomplish.

On whether he is surprised by how much Obama has accomplished already in the first few months of his presidency:

No. I wouldn’t say that I’m surprised. I’m pleased, but not surprised. I think that, actually, Americans in general, you’ll find, by nature are rather impatient. We expect things to happen very, very quickly. So… not surprised, but definitely pleased, and hopeful that it will continue in that direction.

On whether America’s image in other parts of the world has changed as a result of the new administration:

With some people. But I think that there are certain people in this world who need an enemy — that they exist because there is an enemy, and if the enemy no longer existed, then they would not have any power. People like (Iranian President Mahmoud) Ahmedinejad, people who gained power from breeding hatred. I think that there’s always going to those people who need to demonize something or someone — whether it’s the United States or any other country. But it’s refreshing to see some of the people who no longer have a reason to demonize, who are letting their guard down. I think it definitely shows hope for the future.

On whether Disturbed’s stance as an American band has changed as a result of Obama’spresidency:

Not at all. Our support for this president has been very clear ever since he was a candidate. I, actually, was hopeful that Barack Obama would become a presidential candidate when he first spoke at the Democratic National Convention, when he was the keynote speaker; that was my first exposure to him. And obviously he was within the Illinois state government for quite a number of years. So I think that we’ve been hopeful to see him emerge and to see him grow and develop. As far as our stance regarding the troops is concerned, that’s unequivocal. We are behind our fighting men and women no matter what. No matter what they’re ordered to do, they’ve sworn an oath, they follow orders and they do it without question; they sacrifice their families, their lives, their peace in order to preserve ours. So there’s tremendous honor and respect in that, and we will continue and we will always support them.”
