Rock of Love Continues Shameless Mud Bowl

Last night Rock of Love Bus continued with its Mud Bowl game.

Women mud wrestling is one thing, Girls Gone Wild is another thing, but having women tackling each other, and pulling each others clothes off, in a real tackle football game in tons of slippery mud is more tasteless and degrading than the worst 80s professional wrestling gig. And pretty dangerous.

The MVP got a date with Bret Michaels, but she’s lucky she didn’t get a broken collarbone. And I wouldn’t wish that even on these women.

Most of Rock of Love Bus is all in good fun, but this mudbowl game continues to be beyond tasteless. Bret claims its his favorite part of Rock of Love.

“This is my greatest day, right here”

I find that surprising.

It all makes for great television (and, no, it wasn’t sponsored by Rogaine), but how low can we go.

At least Bret had the football cap right.

The other morning, I went into my kitchen for breakfast and turned on the radio. In the morning, I usually listen to WRXP-FM out of New York City because their morning show, featuring DJ Matt Pinfield, is excellent. I was up early and put the station on before the 6 a.m. start of Pinfield’s show. John Lennon’s “Mind Games” came on shortly after I turned on the radio. While I had heard the song literally hundreds of times of the past, something about it just struck me in the early quiet of the morning. Instead of rushing around to get my breakfast together, I sat down and listened to the song intently all the way through. And what a majestic and beautifully crafted song it is! It’s always nice to rediscover a song in this way and gain a new appreciation for it.

John Lennon was one hell of a talent and quite a songwriter. His presence on the music scene has certainly been missed these past 28 years.

You Tube has a video of Lennon’s “Mind Games” that uses footage shot by the BBC in 1974 of Lennon walking around his beloved New York City. It’s a great piece of video to accompany an amazing piece of music. To watch the video for John Lennon’s “Mind Games,” which was the title track to a 1973 solo album by Lennon, click below:

BEST NEW INDIE ROCK: Titus Andronicus

Posted in Rock Music with tags , , on February 14, 2009 by Patrick Prince

I listen to XMU on SiriusXM, always listening for that new cutting edge band that just hits home with me. Every year or so it happens. It happened with Arctic Monkeys and Arcade Fire and Libertines and then Dirty Pretty Things… Now comes Titus Andronicus from New Jersey, sounding like a great mix of Clash, Pogues, and The Libertines, it’s fantastic to my ear. If this is where new music is headed I’ll be VERY happy. Check out the sample video below of the self-titled single:

If you’re lucky, you may be seeing the band at the Bowery Ballroom with Los Campesinos! this weekend in NYC.

Todd Rundgren to Produce First New York Dolls Album in 36 Years

Speaking of drag queens — and some of the comments from the last post were — the New York Dolls will release another album this Spring with Todd Rundgren producing (photo above by Marty Temme). Rundgren produced the band’s debut album 36 years ago. Of course a world tour will follow the album. That goes without saying, no?

But will this collaboration recollect the original Dolls mojo?

Truthfully, I just don’t know if it will ever be the same after the Buster Poindexter phenomenon.

VINTAGE VIDEO: The Cramps – “Naked Girl Falling Down The Stairs”

The Cramps seem like the perfect band to play on, not only Halloween, but Friday the 13th.

Enjoy — and check out Lux in those hooker red high heels. If only John Lennon dressed like this, huh??!!!

Duff McKagan Says Seeing Adler in the Grip of Addiction on VH1 Was “Sad to Watch”

On the Opie and Anthony Show, Duff McKagan (right) had this to say about former bandmate, Steven Adler and his celebrity status on VH1′s Celebrity Rehab and Sober House:

“I’m not a big fan of reality tv, and it really hurt me… watching him like that. It reminded me of a lot of things… both dealing with him in 90-91. It was sad to watch.”

Duff also went onto to say he loves Adler like a little brother. But he would never subject himself to reality tv like Adler did.

But I think Adler needed any help he could get — no matter how exploitive or dubious.

TGIF LYRICS: “I Wanna Rock” by Twisted Sister

Posted in Heavy Metal, Rock Music with tags , , , , on February 13, 2009 by Patrick Prince

Twisted Sister — “I Wanna Rock”

I wanna rock! (Rock)
I wanna rock! (Rock)
I want to rock (Rock)
I wanna rock! (Rock)

Turn it down you say,
Well all I got to say to you is time again I say, “No!”
No! No, No, No, No, No!
Tell me not to play
Well, all I got to say to you when you tell me not to play,
I say, “No!”
No! No, No, No, No, No!
So, if you ask me why I like the way I play it
There’s only one thing I can say to you

I wanna rock! (Rock)
I wanna rock! (Rock)
I want to rock (Rock)
I wanna rock! (Rock)

There’s a feelin’ that
I get from nothin’ else and there ain’t nothin’ in the world
That makes me go!
Go! Go, go, go, go, go!
Turn the power up
I’ve waited for so long so I could hear my favorite song so,
Let’s go!
Go! Go, go, go, go, go!
When it’s like this I feel the music shootin’ through me
There’s nothin’ else that I would rather do

I wanna rock! (Rock)
I wanna rock! (Rock)
I want to rock (Rock)
I wanna rock! (Rock)

There’s so much to be said for lyrical simplicity, no?

Twisted Sister were a good band once. And then they signed with Atlantic Records in the 80s.

I wanted to rock, too, back then — just not to this song.

The song’s video, at least, has a good laugh factor. I love the bandanna-wearing headbangers (posers!!). Whereas the song itself is just bad, the video is so bad it’s good!
