Lizzy Borden Guitarist On Hunger Strike in Jail

Lizzy Borden guitarist Ira Black (above) is a vegan. He is also now a convict (in jail for unpaid fines). The two don’t mesh especially when it comes to Black’s special meatless diet. So Black is on a hunger strike to protest the lack of menu at Los Angeles County Jail.
But the jail must slap some mashed potatoes on Ira’s plate in mess hall, no? … Oh, wait, that sorta mush probably has butter and eggs mixed in it, and that’s a vegan no-no.
Not many vegans in jail, I assume. If only more of them got arrested then perhaps L.A. County Jail would include it in their budget next year.
Ira makes it clear: “If I can just get the word out so that people will start calling the jail, there can be some changes made. I want people to know how legitimate and sincere veganism and vegetarianism is and this is a serious human-rights issue, I’m not just trying to manipulate the system.’
Ira has also contacted other musicians, local media and PETA to get more of a protest going. Go to Inmate Information Center if you feel strongly about this. You never know. You may be a vegan and get arrested some day.
Life’s little odditites: a guitarist in a metal band whose horror themes are based on a deranged serial killer is a sensitive vegan serving time in jail.
If you can figure that one out, perhaps you can figure how to get vegan food served in jails accross America.

This is unbelievable!! A vegan metal-head? Makes you pine for the days when they had to bite-off the head of a bat to get attention.

I am the organizer of the Veggie Pride Parade, NYC. Click on the Web link… We’d like to have Ira Black at our post parade rally in Greenwich Village. Next parade: May 17, 2009.
