Does Jack White’s Guitar Playing Stand Up To Guitarists Jimmy Page and The Edge?
Does the White Stripes leader deserve to be one of the three chosen in a documentary about the iconic influence of electric guitar?
In the new documentary, “It Might Get Loud,” three guitarists — Jimmy Page (70s), The Edge (80s), and Jack White (present… ) — were each chosen to represent a generation.
Could there have been another choice to represent the younger generation of guitar?
Given the way the film is set up, I would have to say that the answer is no. Jack White is definitely a creative contemporary force to be reckoned with nowadays. All together, however, I would have to say Jack White stands beneath them both in the level of talent, songwriting, and overall sound.
I love Jack White’s playing but we are talking about Jimmy Page and the Edge here. Jack White still has some ground to cover in order to catch up to them.
And don’t you think it obvious that Jack White was probably influenced by Jimmy Page?! Instead, White pulls out a Flat Duo Jets album for his main influence, Page pulls out a Link Wray album, the Edge pulls out an album by the Sex Pistols.
World premiere of the movie will be at the 33rd annual Toronto International Film Festival – which runs September 4th thru 13th 2008. All three musicians will attend the premiere.

white is pretty good. i would have chosen a guy like john frusciante over him though. mainstream hits with the chilis, avant garde stuff during his heroin addiction, amazing melodic solo stuff and side bands that strut his chops like ataxia have made him an influence on a generation.

most of his songs are the same

Jamie Hince of The Kills would’ve been a better choice than Jack White. Or Matt Bellamy from Muse.

you make me jajajaja your funny

Is the edge as influential of a guitar player as Jimmy Page? No. Jack White is as phony as John Mayer.
December 1, 2009 at 7:29 pm
What you mean by that mmmmmm idon’t like the edge and if you so smart tell who else can represent present time mmmmmmmmmmmmm
August 29, 2008 at 9:19 am
Jamie Hince?!! C’mon, Curley! Put aside the fact that his two person band sort of imitated the White Stripes and aren’t really that popular. How can he possibly represent the 90′s generation when he put out his first album in 2003? The White Stripes aren’t even a 90′s band! Who could possibly represent the 90′s more than Kurt Cobain? As a guitarist, songwriter and performer? He singlehandedly turned the rock music industry on a dime and set the direction for which bands are still following!
December 1, 2009 at 7:25 pm
yeah I agree but Kurt’s live performences sucked but his a great guitarist despite that he didint solo very much and he only used power chords
August 29, 2008 at 10:59 am
good point about cobain hawk. i forgot about him.
August 29, 2008 at 2:24 pm
Ooops! My bad! Pat did write that Jack White represents the current generation. I still don’t think he fits. But how about Jack Black?
December 1, 2009 at 7:26 pm
are you retarded ?
August 29, 2008 at 4:09 pm
Hawk:
I’m guessing that the documentary makers wanted living guitarists to be in the film. If not, then, yeah, Cobain is an obvious choice.

They missed Alex Lifeson of Rush, Eddie Van Halen, Steve Howe or David Gilmour.
Go see the movie though cause Jack White steals the show and is awesome, talented and funny.

Jimmy, Gilmour and Edge would be absolutely amazing!!!!!

I think Jack is a brilliant guitarist, probably the best in the modern music scene, just listen to the solo in The Switch And The Spur by the Raconteurs, it’s just amazing.

jack white is God… he has brought back the blues and has mastered the minimalist movement
January 16, 2009 at 5:15 pm
If by minimalism, you mean he sucks, I agree.

Hmm this is an interesting question.
Personally I think Jack White is a perfect match.
I wrote a post on the same topic back in November, and actually I’m more concerned by the fact they chose the Edge to be featured in this Film.

I found the Jimmy page and Jack White match up to be totally coherent:
White is part of the sixites rock revival scene and has the same kind of energy to his style. The new generation of guitarist look up to him.
The white stripes and The Raconteurs are perfect evolutions of a band like Led Zep.
Now the Edge on the other hand….yea sure he’s good, U2 wrote incredibly catchy beautiful tunes, they are probably the most iconic band in the world right now, but still, I don’t really get why he got involved.
They could’ve chosen so many other guitarists that had a much greater impact on the evolution of the electric guitar than The Edge during the eighties and nineties. Just to name a few Van Halen, Steve Vai, Angus Young, Slash, Pete Townsend, Brian May, George Clinton, Jeff Beck…
Bah, it’s still going to be a great documentary and I can’t wait to see it.

J Mascis would have been a better choice.
November 24, 2009 at 9:13 pm
srry to burst ur bubles but jack white is a perfect choice he is amazing fucking guitarist and I cant wait to see this doc plus being a musician from this gen I would say he infulenced me the most out of the guitarists that are alive today
December 2, 2009 at 8:21 pm
the edge suck. u2 sucks. they could do a favor to music and retire.
jack white and the white stripes are one of the few things that are really great in modern music
dont need to say anything about page
but jack white is WAY better that the faggot of the edge
July 15, 2011 at 7:40 pm
Jack White is a lame hipster. 60′s revival is awful.
January 7, 2010 at 1:26 pm
Guys, let’s not forget Kurt is no longer with us! G-d rest his soul.
September 6, 2010 at 8:54 am
I have seen the documentary and I think Jack white could get along well, The edge was the crappy side of the documentary
October 8, 2010 at 1:10 am
I saw the movie. At first I thought Jack White was a strange choice as the “third” but after seeing and hearing them all, the Edge seems like the odd man in. I love Edge’s sound, it’s brilliant, but it appears that he’s a very ordinary guitar player absent his electronics. By the end of the movie, Edge is playing the wrong chord during their acoustic version of “The Weight” and Jack White and Jimmy Page are bonding. Still love the Edge, but have a much better appreciation of Jack White.

jack white is perfect for this imo..and he hasnt only been in white stripes…
just look at this awsome performance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIFfZfoUEaM

Why not Radiohead’s guitarist Jonny Greenwood? Surly Greenwood’s guitar playing is more influential, relevant and can I say competent then Jack White. White’s musicianship is average at best but he certainly is trying very hard.
February 12, 2011 at 12:59 am
Jack White SUCKS. He’s an unoriginal poser with very little actual musical talent.
April 15, 2011 at 4:40 am
I cant believe ppl are dissing Jack White here.. Obviously these ppl have very shallow taste in rock music..
Jack is a perfect match, not becuz he is an accomplished guitarist, but because he is “representative” of current rock music era.
There are thousands of guitarists out there most of them will only be remembered by a handful of guitarists… Whereas Edge and Jack will be remembered as “ROCK STARS” forever.
June 12, 2011 at 4:30 pm
umm i think your questioning the credentials of the wrong guitarist here. Jack White > The Edge
August 4, 2011 at 5:23 pm
I believe that The Edge isn’t up to White’s talent.
Cut his (Edge’s) effects off and we’ll see who’s the fuckin’ guitarrist ;)
August 29, 2011 at 11:44 pm
Jack White was a perfect choice.

OMG, Have you seen Jack White on Stage he is f’ing Jim Morrison reincarnated, he may not be a guitar virtuoso the likes of Page and the Edge, but he is so much more. He is in some kind of class by himself like no other, neither the The Edge or Page is or will ever be a front man, Bono and Plant did most of the on stage work for their bands respectively. You listen to the White Stripes and you may think there are 4 or 5 people on stage but there are only 2 and one of them is doing 70% of the work!
