Scottish Trash Talk: The Fratellis Badmouth Popular British Bands and Musicians
The Fratellis, a band best known for their iPod single “Flathead,” have too much trash to talk.
In their own music column in England’s Daily Star newspaper, the band dissed Razorlight:
“We were driving around London and ‘America’ came on the radio and for some reason, who knows what, we all burst out laughing at precisely the same time … Johnny Borrell is a cock.”
The Kooks:
“We hate the Kooks as well – their music is fucking awful.”
And, even Sting:
“Sting seems to know that everyone thinks he’s an idiot, but wouldn’t be able to keep a straight face if we ever had to talk to him.”
Just because you can trash talk doesn’t mean you are one of the Brit big boys like Oasis. I get sick of all the trash talk on the British scene. Other music fans love it… it’s exciting gossip, I guess. But The Fratellis?! C’mon. They are a decent enough band but they haven’t even earned their stripes yet. So, to me, it’s just blah, blah, blah, blah, and so on.
Now go write yourself another iPod song.

I love the way UK bands trash each other. It’s like they have no social filter. So many bands in America are afraid to upset anyone, so they just kiss everyone’s ass. I’d love to see any American band have the balls to say that Nickelback sucks. But they won’t do it.
Agreed on The Fratellis’ criticism of Johnny Borrell. He is a cock. He’s like the UK version of Ryan Adams–a completely self-absorbed asshole.
I’m not a huge fan of The Kooks, but I like some of their stuff. To each his own.
I’m a bit surprised at their rip job on Sting. The Fratellis served as a support act on some dates by The Police last year, including a show I attended at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. What they wrote is pretty insulting. If I were Sting, I’d be pissed off and consiider The Fratellis to be ungrateful.
And don’t forget, Pat: The UK bands slagging each other off gives us material for the blog. :)

I loved the live version of “Mistress Mabel” they did at Glastonbury.
