Black Lips Trash Green Day and Jay-Z

This band gets the Shut-the-f-up award.

Black Lips trash-talked to gigwise.com and said Jay-Z “ruined rap” (ridiculous) and that Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong is a “douchebag” because of being of a particular political mindset (outrageous).

Here is an example of the comments…. bassist Jared Swilley:

“What really turned me off was all these bands who think they are so profound for saying ‘oh we hate George Bush’ – that’s such a cliché.”

Then drummer Joe Bradley:

“It’s more punk rock to say you like George Bush.”

I don’t know about that, Joe. Any band can be pro-Bush if they wanted to. But that doesn’t mean that it is “punk rock” to do so. Punk Rock started as an aggressively rebellious musical movement against the establishment (like, uh, governments and ruling political parties and families, for instance) and the rhetoric they spew to get the average citizen to conform to their ideals. It is not simply taking a contrarian philosophy like a robot.

In other words, could you imagine if the Sex Pistols had written a Pro-Royalty song?

Maybe Black Lips are thinking of Underground/Extreme Metal instead.

Then again, who gives a shit what Black Lips think.

    who are these guys?

While I find it funny when talented British bands slam each other in the press, the comments by Black Lips seem to smack of opportunism. The comments are opportunistic because they seem to taking on two eastablished artists just to make a name for themselves.

Can anybody name a Black Lips song? Anybody? Anybody at all?

    I thought not.

And, no, it isn’t “more punk rock” to say that you like George Bush. It’s just stupid. Period.

    curley coming correct.

  4. Punk Rock is conformity. At least, anything that calls itself so after 1978. And I doubt George Bush loses any sleep over what any of these spoiled Brits think about him. He always looks very well rested.

  5. Patrick Prince Says:

That’s true, Hawk. He didn’t even care what Tony Blair thought.
