Call Back the Coroner
Coroner were a Swedish Metal band always hard to define past that initial tag. I’ve heard them described as gloom metal, noise metal, death metal, progressive metal, trad metal… and with each album they had resisted this sort of categorization. Below is a good video representing the band in a more trad metal vein ala Beatles cover. And for a sample of the band’s talented musicianship, listen to the guitar lead towards the end. Nice.
Here is a sample of a review Powerline ran on Coroner’s debut album (above) in 1987:
Coroner,
“R.I.P.” (Noise Records)
If you love death metal, you’ll love it. If you don’t, you’ll definitely like it. Coroner are former roadies of Celtic Frost who have overstepped the boundaries of death metal and produced an incredible album. Guitarist Tommy T. Baron laid down some great guitar work on this LP. Check him out and you’ll agree he is one of the finer talents we have today. Ron Royce, bass and vocals, along with Marquis Marky on drums, keep a tight impressive rhythm going, with a good mention going to Ron for his vocal work. I enjoyed every track on this album, yet outstanding tracks include Reborn Through Hate, Nosferatu, and the title track R.I.P. Please do yourself a favor and buy this album! Coroner will storm the industry and put new standards on all upcoming bands. — Fred Verhoeven
Unfortunately, the band broke up in 1993 but there is a great Coroner dedication site where you can find lots of information about the band: www.designvortex.com/coroner/

Speaking of Swedish metal, whatever happened to Millencollin?

Actually Coroner are Swiss, and one of the more technically consistent and progressive minded bands of the 80s/90s metal scene. Their final CD “Grin” is phenomenal! Hellhammer/Celtic Frosts Tom Warrior handled vocals on their demo, one of the best demo releases ever!!! And actually much more straight forward. Coroner fuckin rulz!!!!
